Discovering Mumbai's Heritage by Metro

Mumbai is home to two UNESCO World Heritage ensembles — the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco buildings of the Fort precinct. With Line 3 (Aqua Line) connecting South Mumbai, exploring the city's rich architectural heritage has never been easier.
This guide takes you on a metro-connected heritage walk through centuries of Mumbai's history.

South Mumbai Heritage Trail (Line 3)

CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus): Start your heritage walk at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 1888, CSMT is a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. Marvel at the ornate stone carvings, stained glass windows, and the iconic star-shaped central dome.
Flora Fountain / Hutatma Chowk: A short walk from CSMT, this ornamental fountain from 1864 sits at the heart of the Fort business district. Surrounded by stunning Gothic and Indo-Saracenic buildings.
Kala Ghoda District: Mumbai's art district with galleries, cafes, and colonial-era buildings. Visit the Jehangir Art Gallery and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum).
Gateway of India & Taj Mahal Palace: Walk south to Mumbai's most iconic landmarks. The Gateway was built in 1924 to commemorate King George V's visit, while the Taj hotel (1903) is an architectural marvel.

Art Deco Mumbai

Mumbai has the world's second-largest collection of Art Deco buildings after Miami. Key areas to explore:
Marine Drive (near Churchgate): The 'Queen's Necklace' is lined with stunning Art Deco apartment buildings from the 1930s–40s. Walk the 3.6 km promenade to see the curved seafront with its distinctive geometric facades.
Oval Maidan (near Churchgate): This cricket ground offers a unique view — Victorian Gothic buildings on one side, Art Deco buildings on the other. A photographer's dream.
Eros Cinema (near Churchgate): A landmark 1938 Art Deco cinema building, recently restored to its original glory.
New India Assurance Building: Another Art Deco gem near Flora Fountain, notable for its geometric patterns and streamlined design.

Victorian Gothic Architecture

The Fort district is home to some of the finest Victorian Gothic buildings in the world:
Bombay High Court (1879): Gothic Revival masterpiece with beautiful stained glass and stone carvings
University of Mumbai (Rajabai Clock Tower, 1878): Modelled after Big Ben, this 85-metre tower offers panoramic views (open to visitors on select days)
BMC Headquarters (1893): The Municipal Corporation building is an extravagant Gothic structure rivalling London's St Pancras
David Sassoon Library (1870): Beautiful reading room open to visitors, with original timber furniture
Crawford Market (1869): Designed by William Emerson, with bas-relief friezes by Rudyard Kipling's father, Lockwood Kipling

Beyond South Mumbai

Bandra Heritage (Line 3): Bandra has its own heritage trail. Visit Mount Mary Church (1760), Bandra Fort (1640s), and the charming Portuguese-era bungalows of Ranwar Village.
Worli Fort (near Line 3): A 17th-century Portuguese fort overlooking the sea. Best visited at sunset.
Elephanta Caves (ferry from Gateway of India): A UNESCO World Heritage Site — 5th–8th century rock-cut cave temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Take Line 3 to Cuffe Parade, then a short ferry ride.
Sanjay Gandhi National Park (near Line 7): Home to the 2,400-year-old Kanheri Caves — over 100 Buddhist rock-cut caves carved into basalt.

Heritage Walk Tips

1. Wear comfortable shoes: Heritage walks involve a lot of walking on uneven surfaces.
2. Start early: Begin by 8 AM to avoid the midday heat and get the best light for photography.
3. Carry water and sunscreen: Especially from October to May.
4. Join a guided tour: Organizations like the Bombay Heritage Walks offer expert-led tours on weekends.
5. Respect the buildings: Many heritage buildings are working offices or residences. Don't enter without permission.
6. Photography: Most exteriors can be freely photographed. Some interiors require permission.
7. Best time to visit: October to February offers pleasant weather. Avoid monsoon months (June–September) for outdoor walks.
