About Elephanta Caves
Elephanta Caves represent one of the most impressive collections of rock-cut temples in India. Located on Elephanta Island, about 10 kilometers from Mumbai harbor, these ancient caves date back to the 5th to 8th centuries. The main cave features a massive 20-foot-high Trimurti sculpture of Lord Shiva.
History & Significance
The caves were created between the 5th and 8th centuries during various dynasties. Originally called Gharapuri (City of Caves), the island was renamed Elephanta by Portuguese colonizers. In 1987, UNESCO designated Elephanta Caves as a World Heritage Site.
