Marine Drive
Famous waterfront promenade known as Queen's Necklace for its sparkling night lights
Marine Drive is a 3.6-kilometer-long boulevard in South Mumbai that forms a natural 'C' shape along the coast of the Arabian Sea. Also known as the Queen's Necklace because of how the street lights appear like a string of pearls when viewed from an elevated point at night, Marine Drive is one of Mumbai's most iconic landmarks. The promenade is lined with Art Deco buildings on one side and the sea on the other.
Marine Drive was constructed on reclaimed land in the 1920s and completed in 1940. The Art Deco buildings that line the drive were built during the same period. In 2018, the Victorian and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai, including Marine Drive, were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
