Crawford Market (Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai)

About

Historic Victorian market famous for fresh produce and spices. Officially renamed Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, this magnificent Norman Gothic market building was designed by William Emerson and completed in 1869. The stone bas-reliefs adorning the entrance were designed by Lockwood Kipling, father of Rudyard Kipling. Inside, the cavernous halls house sections for fruits, vegetables, spices, dry fruits, flowers, and imported delicacies. The pet market section sells exotic birds, fish, and small animals. The building's fountain, ornate iron framework, and paved courtyards reflect its Victorian grandeur. Located steps from CST station, a morning visit allows you to experience Mumbai's wholesale trading culture at its most vibrant and authentic.
