Global Vipassana Pagoda

About

Magnificent meditation hall and pagoda promoting Buddhist meditation. Rising majestically on Gorai Island north of Mumbai, this stunning golden pagoda is modeled after Myanmar's Shwedagon Pagoda. Its crowning achievement is the world's largest pillarless stone dome—a 30-meter span of interlocking stones held together without any supporting columns. The pagoda houses genuine bone relics of Lord Buddha and features an 8,000-capacity meditation hall where free Vipassana meditation sessions are offered. A multimedia gallery traces the history and teachings of Buddhism. Reaching the pagoda involves a scenic ferry ride from Gorai Creek followed by a short bus ride. The structure was built by S.N. Goenka's Vipassana Research Institute and inaugurated in 2009.
