Walkeshwar Temple

About

Ancient temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva on Malabar Hill. The name Walkeshwar derives from 'Valuka-Ishwar,' meaning the lord of sand, referencing the Shiva lingam that Lord Rama is believed to have made from sand during his journey to Lanka. This makes it one of the oldest temples in Mumbai with deep mythological roots. The complex includes several smaller temples and the sacred Banganga Tank, an ancient freshwater spring-fed tank surrounded by ghats and shrines. Located atop the affluent Malabar Hill, the temple precinct offers a striking contrast—an oasis of ancient spirituality amid South Mumbai's most exclusive real estate. The annual Banganga Festival features classical music performances on the tank's ghats.
